Digital Frames

Digital Picture Frames are not only a great gift idea, but are perfect for your own home as well. In my opinion, a home isn’t a home at all without the contributions of the ones you love. Why not honor those special people and moments in your life by immortalizing them in digital clarity?

Digital picture frames are more then just a novelty--they are practical, too. They allow you to bring life to your home (or office) by offering many features other than just prominently displaying a single picture. Many digital frames have slide show capabilities; some can record sound or play music, too! Your cherished pictures will be embraced in a beautiful frame, which can be found in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes. Your pictures will never fade, never turn yellow, and most importantly, never be damaged or lost. That’s the beauty of digital photography; you can make multiple copies that can be shared over and over again with friends and family and each copy is as picture perfect as the original.

So whether you’re limited on space and want to turn 8 picture frames into one, or you have plenty of space and want all your pictures to be as bright and beautiful as ever, I can assure you that when guests visit your home the pictures seen in these frames will invite a warm conversation and an even warmer place in your heart.

Best,
Michael

Did You Hear That?

Compact, portable, light-weight, and attractive… these are all words that define our go-go-go and look-good-doing-it culture. Whether it’s a car, hand bag, package of gum, or our electronics, we want items that can fit our lifestyle. Since practically everyone has an iPod, Zune, or other variation of an mp3 player, I thought I would talk about the types of earphones available on the market today.

There are many variations but all promise to deliver one thing-- “music to your ears”. But which one is best…earbuds, sports headphones, ear-pad headphones, or full-size headphones? The truth is, they all have pros and cons but ultimately it’s what works best for you.

Earbud headphones are typically small, and are inserted into your ear canal. They are great at canceling out ambient noise that you may not necessarily want to hear (like the guy snoring next to you on your three hour plane trip) and can provide clear, crisp sound. On the other hand they can become quite uncomfortable after wearing them for long periods of time. I know that when I use them for extended periods, sometimes my ears start to feel a little sore. However, they are extremely compact. Usually, earbuds come standard with any portable player you purchase, but you can purchase aftermarket ones that provide a much better sound. Another advantage to these little guys is that they won’t mess up your hair-do and you can wear them, without interference, with earrings, glasses, or a hat.

Sports headphones are another type that you can purchase. I actually am considering upgrading my earbuds to these because they stay in place better when you’re moving around a lot. They come in a variety of styles. Some have vertical headbands, some are horizontal and wrap around that back of your head or neck, and some are not connected by a band at all and simply attach to your ear with soft padded ear clips. They are great for the gym and jogging and I feel they offer less “irritation” (Pun-Intended).

Next up are your more full-size models. These would probably be more useful at home than out in public, but they can provide a more dynamic sound and much better bass response. Ear-pad headphones and full-sized headphones can get extremely pricey but the sound that is delivered is unparalleled. Some can even offer Dolby Digital or surround sound capabilities.

BehindTheBuy offers a variety of headphones for anyone’s price range. Headphones also make a great gift idea. So take a look, pick a pair, and enjoy.

What is an SLR Camera?

How many of you know that SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex? Digital cameras like the ones most of us have or purchase have two lenses. First, there is the lens that you put your eye up to and look through to see the image you wish to capture (called a “viewing lens”) and second is the lens that the camera uses when it actually takes the picture (called the “taking lens”). Cameras that utilize these two separate lenses tend to be called point and shoot cameras.

SLR cameras use only one lens that is connected by a series of mirrors constructed within the camera body. These mirrors reflect light from the lens to the viewfinder and allow the photographer (put your name here) to see the image in the same depth of view. In a sense…what you see is what you get.

The advantage to these cameras is highlighted when taking pictures in a broad setting or when photographing action shots. Another advantage to these cameras is that the lenses are interchangeable. This allows you to take one lens off and swap it with another that may be more suitable for the type of picture you are taking. For example, you can take a 50mm lens used for taking close or wider shots and exchange it for a 135mm lens which lets you zoom in and take a more selective shot.

When shopping for an SLR camera, be sure to pay attention to what the camera is actually offering you because there are different types. For example, there are interchangeable-lens full system digital SLR cameras, like what I have described above and there are also fixed-lens digital SLR’s which offer the same technology but you can not remove the lens.

If you are looking to step up your game and take pictures with a camera that offers much more control and versatility, then a SLR camera (sometimes called DSLR, for Digital Single Lens Reflex) may be for you.

BehindTheBuy offers the top ten best sellers at the best prices. Keep in mind the cameras that you find here are listed based on objective sales data…not subjective. So what you see are strictly the cameras that offer the greatest satisfaction and are sold more then any other. Here is a link to the best cameras on the market:

Mind~Body~Soul

There are no secrets to the health benefits of working out-- you feel better, you look better, and you are more confident. At BehindTheBuy not only can you find the latest Plasma Television or Digital Camera, but there are also a variety of other items like exercise equipment.

Did you know that cardiovascular exercise could help you with more then just losing weight (as if that’s not reason enough)? A good cardio workout can also reduce your stress as well as temporarily relieve your depression or anxiety. I know that I personally spend about 45 minutes, 5 days a week on the elliptical machine and after each session I feel calm, relaxed, energized, and euphoric. Yes, it may be difficult to get motivated but I assure you that once you start, you may find that you’re suddenly looking forward to your next cardio regimen.

Other exercise benefits include stronger heart and lungs, more confidence about how you feel and look, and more energy. In addition, you will also sleep better. I invite you to take a look at the “exercise and fitness” tab which can be found under “Sports and Outdoors” in the list of categories. Thumb through the price ranges and you will be amazed to see all the health and fitness items that are offered. I have seen everything from jump ropes to rowing machines, and stop watches to exercise bikes!

Alphabet Soup

Ok, so there’s DTV, SDTV, EDTV, and HDTV? What does all this mean? Did I buy the wrong TV? “What a headache!” you are probably saying to yourself, but don’t worry…I got your back! There is a simple breakdown for all these categories and I will put it down for you in a non-tech, easy to understand way. If you haven’t read my blog on “Analog to Digital Conversion”, you may want to give it a quick look-see just to get the nuts and bolts of exactly what DTV is.

DTV is really just the TV standard which will take place as of June 12, 2009 and encompasses all the other formats. If you wanted to, you could say that there is a good, better, and best way to view the same Digital Television (DTV) signal.

SDTV – Standard Definition Television would be the basic digital television picture quality you would receive with any television hooked up to your cable box, satellite dish, or an HD antenna and decoder box. Even if you have an analog television, you will be watching SDTV.

EDTV – Enhanced Definition Television is a step up. With EDTV you receive more line scanning--480 lines to be exact and every line paints a complete image on your television instead of splitting the information received into two parts like the old analog signal. This simply means your TV is taking the image received and making it better by enhancing the signal it receives and giving you a clearer and more stable picture.

HDTV- High Definition Television offers you the best picture possible. It is like EDTV but it takes it a step further when it comes to your line scanning. It’s all about the lines. The more lines your TV can produce on your screen the more amazing it looks. HDTV can show you a picture with 1080 lines or 720 lines. It can get a bit technical when talking about your line scanning (interlaced/progressively) but what you should be concerned with is that, when it comes to HDTV, the television will figure all that out. No matter how many lines are transmitted in an HD signal the picture quality is virtually the same. Your HDTV will translate that information and give you a beautiful picture.

So whether you have an SDTV, EDTV, OR HDTV, they are all DTV’s and all will produce a digital picture. The differences between each would just be on a scale of good, better, and then the best possible digital picture you can receive.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask. Or if you have a clarification of a certain point, you’re welcome to post it here.

Best,
Michael

Bluetooth… an Easy Explanation

I was sitting here listening to a little ZZ Top on my computer. Well, actually, I was listening to it on my Saitek A-250 Bluetooth speaker system which is set up on the other side of the room. Suddenly, it occurred to me that we have never really talked about what Blue Tooth is.

Bluetooth is a fantastic technology that allows us to transmit information or data from one device to another as long as both are enabled with a Bluetooth chip (radio/receiver). What does this mean for you and me? Well, it means that we no longer have to fumble around with a spider web of wires and it also means that we are no longer limited by how far a cable will reach. For example, the same speakers that I am listening to now… I can also put outside on the driveway so I can listen to music when I am washing my car.

Bluetooth is not simply for listening to music. When you have equipment that has Bluetooth technology you can do a variety of things. You can transmit a video recording from your camcorder to your television, you can print an email from your computer on the printer, or you can send a picture from your camera phone to a file in your computer without the use of any cables connecting the two. These are just a few examples to illustrate the possibilities of uses that Bluetooth can offer. In a nutshell, Bluetooth is a cable-replacement technology.

Interested in a little history lesson? The trademarked name Bluetooth is actually named after a Danish King who united and controlled Norway and Denmark. His love for blueberries and his over indulgence over time turned his pearly whites into blue stained teeth. Hence, the name Bluetooth.

So cut the strings and start living life wire free. You will be surprised to see how many tech items you purchase will be enabled with this technology.

If you’re interested in learning more technical aspects of Bluetooth, I have included in this blog a link that will take you to a tutorial overview of what Bluetooth is all about.

DVD Recorders

How many times have you wanted to record your favorite TV program, or make a backup copy of one of your favorite movies? What about making copies of cherished family moments--like a wedding, birth, or your son’s winning touchdown at his little league football game.

Today’s DVD player is yesterday’s VCR. One thing, however, that every standard DVD player doesn’t have is the capability to record. Why is this? I have often wondered why that sacred button is not one of the controls featured on my DVD player. Should we chalk it up to today’s legal environment where you can sue for having coffee that is too hot or win millions for getting overweight because you ate too many cookies?

Well, there is a solution that will allow for the recording of your favorites: upgrade your home theater system with a DVD recorder. This piece of equipment is a great asset to anyone who wants to make copies of his or her favorite movies, memories, or songs. DVD recorders also do more then just make copies. In a sense, they are dual functioning because they are also a player. So if you are limited on space and don’t think you have room for adding another piece of equipment, you can rest assured that you can not only record with a DVD recorder but also play your home favorites.

There are many types of recorders on the market that can play and record in different formats. I have found many of the best DVD Recorders on the market at Behind The Buy-- thanks to the trend reports that are supplied by Amazon.com. I’ve posted a link to help you find the best one for your home. All you have to do is enter your price range and you will see the top sellers that have provided the highest level of satisfaction. Take a look and let us know what you think.

Analog to Digital Television Transition

On June 12, 2009, watching television as we know it will come to an end. By order of federal law, the transmission of Analog broadcasting will cease and Digital Television broadcasting will reign supreme. Time is rapidly approaching for this conversion, so what does this mean for us…the consumer? Do I have to purchase a new TV? Can I still receive over the air channels using my antenna? Why do we have to have a new signal anyway?

The age of digital is upon on us and this is not a bad thing, so don’t be scared and confused. Analog broadcasting has been the standard format for transmitting television programming since the invention of the TV. Now it’s time to evolve. Digital Television, or DTV for short, can provide a better picture and sound quality than the former Analog signal. Comparatively, it would be like watching a DVD as opposed to a VHS (remember those). A digital signal offers the transmission of more data and allows us to view and hear an image with better resolution, sharper images, and cleaner sound.

In most cases, there is no need to purchase a new television even if you have an analog TV. If you have satellite or cable programming, chances are your provider is already providing you with a digital signal and you should experience little or no change after June 12, 2009. If you are using an antenna, then you may have to get a converter box which sits right on top of your TV and is the connection point for your antenna and your television. There will still be free broadcasting of channels just as there is now; it just will be offered digitally and you can get digital converter boxes at most electronic retailers.

If you do decide to purchase a new Digital Television, there is a couple to choose from. You can get one with a built in digital tuner called an integrated DTV, or you may purchase a DTV monitor. The difference is that if you are viewing programming via antenna, you will need a digital converter box with the DTV monitor. If you have cable, or satellite programming as mentioned before, your provider will already be transmitting the digital signal and no box will be needed unless you want to watch a program that is over the air.

Finally, the analog signal will not be completely gone. Analog transmission will be used for many other important functions like communications for emergency personnel and other technologies. By converting to DTV after June 12, 2009 the airways will have less interference and thus provide a reliable source of safety broadcasting, emergency communications, and other technological advances.

If more information on this subject is something you’re interested,I would recommend this website www.dtvtransition.org .

Breathe in the Fresh Air

After watching the news recently, I began to think about the importance of having clean air to breathe. The global issues affecting our planet and the air we breathe are vast and complex; I will not pretend to know the answers for solving the world’s air pollution problems, although I would like to see an increase in the use of clean coal technologies. If you’re unsure what “Clean Coal” is or would like to learn more about it, you can click on these links to find out more:

http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-clean-coal.htm http://www.fossil.energy.gov/programs/powersystems/cleancoal/

Admittedly, global pollution issues may be outside of my scope (as an individual) so I would like to bring it a little closer to home. The air we breathe in our own home can be just as dangerous as the air we breathe outside. There are many types of allergens that can cause our bodies to be agitated and, as a result, may cause us to sneeze, cough, and itch. For those who react more severely to allergens-- someone with asthma, for example, the reaction may be more severe or life threatening. You can follow this link for some good information on airborne allergens: http://aircleaner.zonemaster.com.sg/airborne_allergens.htm

We can protect ourselves and the ones we love, however, by cleaning the air we breathe at home with air purifiers. Purifiers are a great asset to any home and the benefits gained by using them will be realized, not only by you and your loved ones, but also by every person who passes through your door. You will immediately notice that you are coughing and sneezing less. Your throat won’t be as sore in the mornings when you wake up and you may even begin to realize that you feel more rested because you are breathing better when you are asleep.

There are various types of airborne allergens like pollen, cigarette smoke, dust, pet-dander, and mold (that you may or may not see) just to name a few. These allergens and many more can hide in all types of places if you’re not careful. Attics, basements, and garages are a breeding ground for mold and ceiling fans, curtains, and mini-blinds are sanctuaries for dust-mites, for example. Air purifying systems can help you win the battle against these intruders. So start breathing cleaner air while at home and tell me what you think about your new air purifiers.

“What the heck is DECT”?

What is DECT? DECT is an acronym which stands for Digitally Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications. DECT phone systems is a new technology to the United States—one that is a fully established and working system that originated in Europe and is now their primary frequency band for all telecommunications.

DECT technology could be a great asset to your home or business. It operates off of a single base station (or several, if you have an extremely large coverage area) and transmits its signal on a radio frequency of 1.9 GHz. The Dect system is called DECT 6.0 in the USA.

With the average household using wireless Internet, Bluetooth devices, multi-functioning remote controls, and a plethora of other gizmos and gadgets, owning a DECT 6.0 phone could be a great option for your next home telephone. One of the great things about this technology is that you have less interference than with your traditional cordless phones, and your conversations are more secure. DECT phones have a “handover” feature that seamlessly transfers your call as you move around your location from one base station to the next. If you’re wondering how many base stations you need…just one base can provide coverage up to 100 meters outdoors!

DECT phones will provide you with a clear signal even when in the presence of other radio frequencies like wireless networks, Bluetooth technologies, baby monitors, etc. DECT can also be used as a wireless LAN and wireless Internet access service, an added value when purchasing a new phone especially if you have a network or are interested in creating one. I found a lot of information for DECT Technologies from these articles:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DECT

http://www.dectweb.com/Introduction/answers.htm

If you’re interested in learning the history of DECT or more detailed capabilities of DECT, the websites mentioned above may be a great place to start. If anyone currently has a DECT phone in their home or at their office I would love to hear some first hand experiences. Please share to let our readers know what you think?

Wireless Printing

Remember the days when every electronic device we used had a wire--did I just date myself? Well, anyway, those days seem like a lifetime ago! In today’s times, if something doesn’t come equipped with a WiFi connection or Blue Tooth technology, we think twice about it.

Currently, I am looking to upgrade my home office with a new printer and I could use your help. I’ve looked at quite a few but one feature I definitely want is a wireless connection. I like the aesthetics of it and with the technology becoming cleaner and more secure; I really don’t see a reason not to go that route. Does anyone have a recommendation for a wireless printer?

I also am slightly limited on desk space so I want something that is compact but I don’t want to loose functionality or, more importantly, quality. As I have mentioned in earlier blogs taking pictures is a hobby of mine and going to the photo lab to print every one can get quite expensive. I am excited about the time and money I will save by printing the pictures at home. And to think that I will have pictures as crisp as the ones you get developed at the photo lab! I also would like to have an image viewer built in as well as media card slots so I can just pop my card out of my camera and into the printer. Here’s a few that I like that are right in my price range; what do you think?

http://www.behindthebuy.com/reports/?browseNode=172635&pt=2

I realize that the tone of this particular blog is a little more “Q” then “A” but I value your opinions and look forward to letting you know which one I have chosen. All recommendations, suggestions, personal experiences, and feedback are welcomed. Please post your comments here.

"A Cool Refrigerator"

Refrigeration has come a long way since the first “icehouses” of the early 1800’s. Today’s refrigerator offers a lot more--design, ergonomics, entertainment, and the ability to keep your frozen foods frozen and your cold foods cold. Depending on your lifestyle, there is a refrigerator for every taste and budget.

In college I remember having a refrigerator that was big enough to put a six pack in (of soda, of course); later I upgraded to one that could actually fit food, although it would have been nice if it came with a retinal scanner to keep my roommate out of it. Today my needs are a little different, and the space I have for appliances has grown larger than the old dorm room that I once inhabited. Of course, style is something that still is very important to me. Did I say style when talking about appliances like a refrigerator? Yes!

I have looked in stores, online, and even in friends’ houses and, as I mentioned earlier, refrigeration has come a long way. If you are in the market for a cool refrigerator for your home (no pun intended), you won’t have to look too hard. Fridges today include built in television and stereo’s. They are set up better to allow easier navigation when you’re rummaging through your groceries to get to that secret stash you have hidden in the back.

If you are in the market for a new cooktop, range hood, wine cellar, or refrigerator for your home, you will find what you’re looking for at BehindTheBuy. Just search through the categories and I am confident that you will find the perfect new addition for your home.

My Best Friend is My Computer

“Ding Dong the witch is dead, the wicked witch, the wicked witch. . “ Do you remember that line from an American classic film Wizard of Oz? Did you know that Wal-mart was knocked off of its perch as the number one Fortune 500 Company? (I personally am so happy about that!) Did you know that doctors at major hospitals use Twitter while in surgery to help teach students in the class room by offering real-time instruction? By the way, thank you to all who have joined with us on Behind The Buy’s Twitter account!

All these questions have one common denominator, and that is Computers. I got these stories from ABC NEWS, Good Morning America, and Yahoo! I posted a Tweet today on twitter, checked my Myspace comments, and even learned how to reinstall the carpet that I flooded in my house last week. (Uhhggg—that is a story for another day!) I did all this and it’s not even noon yet!

It’s no secret that computers are a must-have in today’s modern and fast paced world. There are many to choose from! Whether it’s a Mac, PC, Desktop, or Laptop, there is a computer out there that can fit your lifestyle and be a great asset to you. Computers can save you time, money, and provide you with endless entertainment by offering you information on all the latest things to do, movies to watch, recipes to cook, and much more.

Behind The Buy can also help save you time and money, by making it quick and easy to find the perfect computer at a low price. Here is a link to the five best for the category I chose http://www.behindthebuy.com/reports/?browseNode=565108 but don’t hesitate to enter your own search criteria. All you need is to choose your category and price!

Well as much fun as it has been to talk with you about computers and the knowledge it can bring, I have to get back to that carpet install! Thanks for your time and if you have any interesting, fun, funny, or down right embarrassing stories where a computer has helped you out, please do tell! Post your story here and share with us all. I look forward to hearing them!

Go Big or Go Home

This week I am going to have the opportunity to visit the home of the Senior Editor of BehindTheBuy.com and check out his Amazing Home Theater. So before I go, I thought I would take a moment to talk to you about the benefits of using a projector to enhance your viewing pleasure.

In the olden days projectors were extremely expensive and quite limited in the resolution they could deliver. Traditionally they were used for the office. Today you still can purchase data projectors but you can also get video projectors. Don’t be fooled though.--you can still use video projectors in the office as well. They just offer much better resolution and contrast. In fact, a video projector can be used with any piece of equipment (i.e.: DVD player, computer, iPod) as long as it has a video feed. Also prices have come down drastically and the picture quality is impressive. If any of you have a DLP or LCD projector and would like you to grace us with your input. Please post them here.

One thing to be aware of when purchasing a projector: you want to have an audio source to connect it to. Yes, some projectors do have a small speaker that is built in (usually for small presentations), but generally with a big picture you want to have big sound as well. I would highly recommend a surround sound system that can deliver sound that compliments the amazing picture quality, clarity, and size of the image you are viewing. If you do not have a surround sound system, you can also hook it up to your home stereo provided it has an available audio connection.

With all the components in place, the next time you watch a movie at your home may be the last time you ever think about paying to go out to the movies. My last theater experience was miserable. I paid $8.25 to have someone kick the back of my chair repeatedly and to listen to an agitated mother try and calm her screaming infant. So you may understand when I say I am excited to see a movie with theater quality in the comfort of an inviting home without all those “little distractions”! I have included a few links through BehindTheBuy.com for some projectors that I have chosen as well as some surround sound systems. All you have to do is find the one for you and get the popcorn ready.

DLP Projectors: http://www.behindthebuy.com/reports/?browseNode=160355011
LCD Projectors: http://www.behindthebuy.com/reports/?browseNode=160355011
Surround Sound: http://www.behindthebuy.com/reports/?browseNode=160355011

Does anyone have a home theater at their home? How do you like it? What advice could you offer to others?

Here are some additional resources to help you learn more of the technical aspects of LCD and DLP projectors:

"The Five Best"

In the past couple of weeks a few people have asked me, “How come when I want to look for something specific, for example a 27” television I can’t find it?” Since the purpose of this blog is to pose questions and gain insight—for you and me- I thought I would take a moment to answer that question.

The answer to how come I can’t find specific item’s is simple…YOU CAN! You, as the consumer, have access to every item available on Amazon.com. When you look something up through behindthebuy.com we offer you the five best items based on the category you’re looking for and the amount of money you want to spend. These five items are taken from Amazon.com’s trend reports, which list items based on the most purchased, highest sales volume, and fewest returns (hence the greatest level of satisfaction). This takes the guess work out of the equation: I know what I want to buy and I know how much I want to spend but I just don’t know what would be the best one to purchase.

So essentially what you are getting is the best buy for the dollar, based strictly on the numbers from Amazon.com and, as we all know, the numbers don’t lie. You can rest assured that when you purchase an item through Behind the Buy you are getting the Best! No need to worry about someone else’s biased opinion or lack of knowledge. You can be comforted by the knowledge that not only are you getting a quality product from the most respected online retailer in the world but also, that hundreds of thousands of consumers just like you and I have purchased that same exact item and remain 100% satisfied!

I hope I was able to shed some light on this subject for you and if there are any other questions all you have to do is ask. I encourage all readers to post their comments, ideas, feedback, or whatever else comes to your mind and it is my promise that, even if I don’t know the answer, I will find someone who does so that I can give you an answer as good as the purchase you make here at behindthebuy.com.

Michael

Digital Cameras

How often do you use your digital camera? What prevents you from taking it with you when you are out and about? What features would you want in a camera if you were to purchase one today? These are the questions that you need to ask yourself when purchasing a new digital camera.

I know that when it comes to my circle of friends, a digital camera practically deserves a seat at the dinner table. We don’t go anywhere without one! I think in some sick way it brings out the celebrity in all of us. Knowing that the flash could go off at any moment keeps you on your toe. But sometimes the best pictures are the ones caught on the fly or in a split second when the uninteresting becomes iconic in a picture that will last a lifetime. In these little moments… time is of the essence. To me, the less delay time a camera has from the time you press the button until the shutter snaps and captures the image, the better. The camera I currently have takes great pictures. Unfortunately, it is more then a few years old and the delay time can span approximately three seconds. Newer cameras are quicker-- with most having a delay time of only one second. I know that, traditionally speaking, the cause for the delay in all digital cameras is because once you hit the shutter button there are a series of computer functions that must happen before the camera is actually ready to capture the photo. (http://www.streetdirectory.com/travel_guide/104310/photography/understanding_shutterdelay_in_digital_cameras.html) Although, there are settings I can turn off or on to limit the delay, I really don’t see too significant of a change. Unless, there is some trick out there that I am not aware of, it looks like a new digital camera is in the future for me.

Because I use my camera mostly when I go out to social events with friends, I tend to dress in more flattering apparel on these occasions. With today’s fashions it’s not so easy to conceal items in your pockets unless you’re fortunate enough to have a girl with you who will allow you to store all your stuff in her purse. (and trust me, I’m probably more likely to be caring her purse than she is to be toting around all my belongings!) With that said it would be nice to have a camera that is sleeker in design. So when it comes to design does practicality meet functionality? Let’s face it, if it looks nice and doesn’t cause an unsightly bulge in my overcoat, that is one thing, but if it takes horrible pictures it’s not really worth it, is it? I would be interested to hear from you--what camera do you have and what do you like about it? What kind of pictures do you take? What brands do you like and which cameras do you feel deliver the most satisfaction and dependability? If you were to help someone buy a camera today, what features would you recommend?

"The Guiding Light"

Whether you ride your bicycle around the block or across the country, many of you know that two wheels and a seat are just the basic requirements to begin your adventure on the road. There are many accessories which can make your trip more pleasurable and, more importantly, safer.

Last weekend I realized that I needed to add a little light to my life--otherwise my next road trip might just be in an ambulance. Let me back up: a couple of nights ago I decided to take my friend’s dog on a little pleasure cruise around the block. I filled up my water bottle, grabbed the leash, and saddled up my bike. We started off down the street and everything was great but as soon as we came to the first stop sign, a car decided to cheat the corner and almost ran me over. (Don’t worry the dog is fine!) My first thought was, “Gosh, can’t that guy see where he’s going?” Well, the answer to that is yes! He could see perfectly well--he just couldn’t see me. In this particular situation I was just another shadow in the night.

Once I got home I instantly went to behindthebuy.com to look up different ways to become more visible on the road. Did you know that behindthebuy.com actually has an entire link devoted to sports and outdoor recreation? I found an array of reflectors, blinkers, and yes, even the LED headlight that I was looking for! There was even a mini computer for your bicycle that could turn your simple joy ride into a super-workout by tracking your speed, distance, time, and calories burned (by the way, that is just four of its 17-functions!). I also upgraded my water bottle to one that has thermal layers so that I can keep my beverage of choice ice cold while I expend some calories on my bicycle.

So whether you’re in the dark about which big screen to buy or you just need a guiding light (no pun intended), I’m sure you can find what you’re looking for here at behindthebuy.com.

Enjoy!

Grill-Meister

Finally-- spring is here! How many of you think that this is the best time of the year? I know that it is my favorite season. As the weather warms up and our thoughts turn to the beach and other outdoor activities, I can practically smell the hamburgers cooking. Oh, yeah, I guess a grill is essential at this time of the year!

I don’t currently have a grill and to be honest, being a recent college graduate, I don’t have much “to” grill either (lol). I am, however, in the market for one and, of course, want to get the best “bang for my buck”. So please, if you have a grill that you couldn’t live without, let me know.

I was thinking about starting small and working my way up. That way I can see if I’m any good before investing in some of the larger grills. I am a huge beach bum! I love surfing and wakeboarding, as well as other outdoor activities like biking, and hiking. Concerts and sporting events are other activities that I enjoy! I usually do these things with friends so I feel that I need something portable and compact, and I definitely don’t want to mess with any charcoals. PROPANE BABY….that’s what I need! So with that said, does anybody know of a great propane grill that is portable, compact, relatively inexpensive (Biggest Bang for Buck), that could grill up enough food for four?

I’ve seen some good recommendations at behindthebuy.com (http://www.behindthebuy.com/reports/?browseNode=738460), but I would love to get some feedback from you.

How many square inches of cooking surface should I require? What preferences do you “grill masters” require in your grills? What accoutrements should I expect if I hope to perfect my grilling abilities?

My Dad is an awesome griller in fact I could say he’s …. (Don’t get mad at me)….the Best! My grilling experience really comes from watching and enjoying, so one more important criterion for those of you who can help: please...nothing too complicated!! (I majored in Business not Thermo Nuclear Mechanics!)

Thanks,

Michael

Plasma or LCD?

Which is better--LCD or Plasma televisions? This question could create a much-welcomed debate! When plasma first came out, I remember it being all the rage. It was the best thing since the old projection TV-- which as we all know, unless you were sitting right in front of it, you couldn’t see a darn thing, especially in rooms that had bright lighting. Plasma TV offers a sharp picture and a wide viewing angle of about 160 degrees. I’ve tried researching the technology for plasma and although there is plenty of material out there, I think it is a bit too complex for me to understand (and definitely too complicated for me to try and paraphrase here). What I do know is, as a result of all this complicated technology, we enjoy slimmer, sleeker television equipment and a larger clearer picture.

Now not only are we blessed with plasma, but we also have LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) which until recently (a direct competitor with plasma) was extremely pricey. Although different in its construction (LCD uses a matrix of thin film transistors which power liquid crystals), the end result is the same-- a stellar picture.

I personally have been interested in getting my hands on a 46” LCD flat panel television! Does anybody think that I am out of my mind or do you think I am right on the money? I have compared several Plasma’s to LCD’s and in my opinion I think the picture offered by the LCD is better. I do see that the picture is not as clear when you get to the extreme right or left but seriously, who sits in those remote areas when they watch TV?

OK, now for the Q & A Section: Now that the prices are comparable, which is the better buy? What are the advantages of each? Yes, plasma may be able to entertain a wider audience when viewing off of its axis but studies have shown that LCD can produce a brighter picture. Is this true? What about longevity? To me, there is a difference between a purchase, and an investment. A 46” television, no matter what the technology, is going to be a “Major Investment” for me and I want that investment to last!

Also, does one have an advantage over the other in regards to image burn or ghosting? I play a lot of X-box-- maybe too much! -- and I have heard that plasma is prone to image burn. Is this true?

As you can see I have a lot of questions. Maybe you can help in shining some light on this subject for me. All opinions are requested and welcome.

Thanks for visiting!

Blueray: What the Heck?!

Blue Ray DVD? What is this phenomenon that is taking over the DVD, Video Game, P.C., and Music Industry by storm? I have to admit I feel a little behind the eight ball when it comes to this product. I try to stay abreast when it comes to technology and until recently it seemed that this was a product that I couldn’t afford to experience. But now that prices have come down significantly, I think the biggest obstacle isn’t how much but …which one?

I love movies! (You could give me almost any quote and I could tell you from which movie it came. I have watched way too many movies!) However, maybe I am stuck in the 20th century when it comes to Blue Ray. Can anybody help me with this question: Why is Blue Ray so great?

I have done some research and I have discovered that a Blue Ray capable disc can store about five times more video content than that of an ordinary DVD (or CD.) I also learned that its name is derived from the blue violet laser that it uses which actually has a shorter wavelength than that of the “Old School” (not the movie!) DVD players of the past. http://www.blu-ray.com/info/

I heard that because more data can be stored, it actually makes viewing and listening a totally different experience! Is this true? Those of you that have had experience with Blue Ray-- is it worth the upgrade?

I have always taken great pride in my movie collection and sound system and although I don’t have the latest and greatest, I wouldn’t say my equipment is anything to sneer at. With that said, however, I want to maximize my viewing pleasure. Do you think that buying a Blue Ray DVD player would help with this and why? Also, does it improve the sound quality at all, or is it just the picture that receives all the kudos?

I would have to say that given the times we are living in right now, we are all spending a lot more time at home. What better way to spend your time at home than with friends and family? Watching movies is fun and entertaining and if there is something out there that can make the viewing experience even better-- I am all in.

Get back to me on this, I need some help . . .

iPod in My Car Without Wires?

Hey everybody! As the purchaser of a new car, I am really excited to start personalizing it with an upgraded sound system. As most of you will agree, it’s almost unfathomable to go anywhere without an iPod, so I am happy to see how the prices have come down for after-market in-dash stereo’s that not only put out great sound with much less distortion then the factory players, but that also have iPod connection capabilities. Now I can take the music of my life from my home to the office without skipping a beat. Any ideas how I can really make my sound system stand out?

One thing I think would be cool is if they came out with a receiver that could read my iPod by Bluetooth so that I could avoid the tacky wire from my iPod to the dash. Either way, it’s great to see such an array of choices at such great prices!

I’d love to hear if anybody out there has any recommendations for car stereos. I used to be a car audio installer but have been out of the game for quite a while. Also, is there anything out there right now with blue tooth capabilities and if so how good is the connection?

Been There, Bought That!

Been There, Bought That!

Have you ever been in the market for a product purchase, had an idea of what you wanted to spend, but had no idea where to start? I know I used to regularly find myself in that predicament. When I recently discovered BTB.com I was quite impressed! This one stop website provides a turnkey solution to making smarter and more confident product purchases.

I like the fact the products featured on this site are not just there because someone has a bias toward a particular brand or because some retail company paid top dollar to put their product on the top of the site. Instead, the products get featured because they are best sellers. The products featured in the trend reports of this site are purchased more then others and have proven to deliver consistent satisfaction. The numbers don’t lie and the trend reports are right here to prove it!

Did you know that Behind The Buy has an alliance with Amazon.com? That’s right, the largest multi-category retailer in the world! It’s that journalistic relationship that allows BTB.com to deliver the objective product trend reports they feature. It’s great. You get all the latest products and prices along with detailed descriptions and even reviews by past purchasers. If that’s not enough, there’s even the added feature of being able to make a product purchase right then and there. You like it; you buy it …… Click. Done!

Let’s face it, our time is limited in this digital age. Driving around town aimlessly, or worse, surfing endlessly on the web can be extreme time and money wasters when you are shopping. Finally, a way for regular people now exists to empower consumers to quickly, objectively and conveniently research and make a product purchase.

Please let me know it BTB.com has made your life a little bit easier in this stressful world of ours.

Best,

Mike
